The Małopolskie Biotechnology Centre company (Małopolskie Centrum Biotechniki Sp. z o.o.) was established in Krasne on 1st December 2000, in continuation of the Professor Władysław Bielański Animal Breeding and Inseminating Office in Krasne.



History

In 1955, a National Bulls' Station branch was opened in Rzeszów. Three years later, it was transformed into a branch of the National Livestock Insemination Station, which was granted the status of the National Livestock Insemination Station for the Province of Rzeszów in 1961. A growing demand for the Station's services necessitated an expansion of its facilities. Consequently, the Centre was transferred from Rzeszów to nearby Krasne (5 km away) in 1967. In 1975, when breeders' organizations and insemination institutions were incorporated into a joint structure as a result of a nationwide reorganization project, Animal Breeding and Inseminating Office in Krasne was established. In 1990, it was named after Professor Władysław Bielański.

In 1995, our institution was the first in Poland to obtain the national licence for bull sperm production, and two years after, the European Commission licensed it to produce and distribute bull sperm within the territory of the European Union. The last transformation took place on 1st December 2000, when our state-owned institution was transformed into a sole shareholder company of the State Treasury, under the name of Małopolskie Centrum Biotechniki Sp. z o.o. in Krasne (Małopolskie Biotechnology Centre - a limited liability company).

The Małopolskie Biotechnology Centre company is a successor of the 50-year-long traditions of the Animal Breeding and Inseminating Office in Krasne. Apart from the headquaters in Krasne, there are local branches of our Centre in: Brzesko, Czermin, Częstochowa, Jasło, Karczów, Klecza Dolna, Nowy Sšcz, Przeworsk, Racibórz and Zabierzów. They cater for domestic animals reproduction of breeders in four provinces: Małopolskie, Opolskie, Podkarpackie and Slaskie.

At present, our tasks include:

• cattle insemination,
• pig insemination,
• rabbit insemination,
• production and insemination of queen bees,
• implementation of the breeding value estimation and selection programmes: bulls and boars of various breeds.

The insemination services are performed through a chain of AI service outlets in the following provinces:

• Podkarpackie
• Malopolskie,
• Slaskie,
• Opolskie.

For the sake of the implementation of the nationwide breeding value estimation and selection programme, the sperm of the best stud males (both from Poland and abroad) is used to inseminate cows, sows, and does.

Insemination of animals by using the best stud males' sperm increases the genetic value of the livestock and enhances the value of their functional traits, such as:

• production of milk of desired contents
• growth rate (net gain)
• fodder efficiency per 1 kg of body growth
• meat content

Breeding value estimation and selection programmes are aimed at obtaining the best quality males to be used for enhancing the livestock quality all over Poland and increasing the livestock production cost-effectiveness.

For cow insemination, the sperm of the best stud bulls of milk and beef breeds is available, estimated on the basis of their offspring functional traits. The sperm may be chosen in an AI outlet, as well as other departments of the Centre.

For pig insemination, the sperm of the stud boars showing the highest breeding value described by two qualities - net gain and the percentage of meat in a carcass and the highest functional traits proven on the basis of their offspring and their own performance test. Especially worth considering are stud boars of paternal breeds, as the heterosion effect results in a decrease in the feed efficiency per 1 kg of body growth and the increase in their meat content, which bring tangible advantages in terms of cost-effectiveness for the farmer.

For rabbit insemination, the sperm of the best stud males imported from France (the HYLA line) is offered, which is collected and prepared in our branch in Brzesko. A high fertilization rate (90%) proves that quality of the sperm and our staff.

Our queen bees ensure high honey production, immunity to diseases, winter survival rate and lack of swarmability and gentleness enables work "without a bee hat".

Very goods breeding results of our company are due to:

• well-organized and well-equipped technical facilities, including modern laboratories,
• effective work of well-experienced and highly-qualified staff,
• co-operation with Polish and foreign institutions (National Research Institute of Animal Production in Balice; Institute of Genetics and Animal Breeding in Jastrzębiec; University of Agriculture in Kraków; Basamungsverein Neustadt in Bayern; Ceskomoravska Plemenarska Unie a.s. Ricany; Sersia France; UPRA Pie Rouge; AGENA; URCEO; Besamungsanstalt Gleistorf).

The scale of performance of our professional activities depends on a number of factors, such as, for example:

• number of cows, sows and does in a given area
• livestock farm concentration,
• marketing activities,
• changes in the farming environment.

The priority of our Managing Board and the whole staff is to maintain the livestock of the highest breeding value. Such an approach has produced impressive breeding results, as well as tangible profits for all the breeders who have been co-operating with our company for many years now.
